QR Codes on Business Cards: Worth It or Just a Trend?

Business cards with QR codes look professional and modern. Whether people actually scan them depends on who's receiving the card and what you've put on the other side of it.

The honest answer

Scan rates on business card QR codes are low. Most people who receive a business card glance at it, maybe save the number, and file it away or forget it. They don't pull out their phone to scan it in the moment unless there's a compelling reason to.

That said, QR codes on business cards do get scanned — just not at conferences-table-speed. They get scanned later, at a desk, when someone wants more information or wants to save your contact details digitally. The use case is convenience, not immediacy.

What to link to

The most useful destination for a business card QR code is a vCard — a digital contact file that saves your details directly to the phone's contacts app with one tap. It's faster and less error-prone than manually entering information from a card.

A LinkedIn profile is a reasonable second choice, especially in B2B contexts. A personal website works if it clearly shows who you are and what you do. A generic homepage that takes work to navigate is not a good destination.

Design considerations

Business cards are small. The QR code competes with your name, title, phone number, and email for limited space. A 1.5cm code is about as small as you can reliably print and scan. Don't crowd it into a corner with no quiet zone around it — read our QR code size guide for the minimum dimensions.

Add a label under the code: "Scan to save contact" or "Scan to view my portfolio." Without context, a lot of people won't know what the code does.

Is it worth adding one?

If the alternative is people typing your email address incorrectly or losing your details, yes. The marginal cost of adding a QR code to a business card design is near zero. Even a 10% scan rate from cards you hand out adds up over time.
